We’ll have bicyclists, runners and walkers on our streets this weekend, so please be extra alert, cautious and patient if you’re driving in town.
The 2016 Tour de Palm Springs Charity Bike Rides will have their start and finish in downtown Palm Springs on Saturday, Jan. 23. The start will begin at Palm Canyon and Alejo Road, heading east on Alejo and turning north on Indian Canyon. To accommodate the vendor expo and bike rides:
The Fifth Annual Mayor’s Healthy Planet, Healthy You Race and Wellness Festival will be held Sunday, Jan. 24, beginning at 7 a.m., at the Wellness Park at Ruth Hardy Park.
There is a 10K race (starting at 7:30 a.m.), 5K run/walk (starting at 8 a.m.) and 1K fun run for kids (starting at 9:30 a.m.) plus the Wellness Festival which is being held from 7 a.m. to noon, also in the park. There will be health testing, educational information, free samples and fitness classes.
To accommodate the event, the parking lot by the tennis courts at Ruth Hardy Park will be posted “no parking” from 5 a.m. to noon Sunday, Jan. 24.

The ONE-PS Ecology Committee is coordinating a citrus exchange this weekend. If you, or people in your neighborhood, have too much fruit, bring your extra tangerines, lemons, grapefruits, etc. to the Mayor’s Healthy Planet, Healthy You Race and Wellness Festival Sunday, Jan. 24, at the Wellness Park. You can share your bounty with others or trade your tangelos for lemons. Either way, we can cut down on waste. You may drop off your citrus from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23 and from 7 to 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 24 at the Wellness Park which is adjacent to Ruth Hardy Park. The exchange will be take place on Sunday as part of the Wellness Festival. Attached is a flier to help you promote the citrus exchange in your neighborhoods.
A ribbon cutting will take place in the Desert Highland Gateway Estates Neighborhood at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 26 to celebrate the grand opening of a new health and wellness facility at the James O. Jessie Desert Highland Unity Center. A news release is attached with more information.
The BUZZ trolley is celebrating its one-year anniversary with a birthday bash at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 28. The party will be at Palm Canyon Drive and Arenas during VillageFest. Make plans to join City officials, actress Suzanne Somers and other local celebrities in the festive occasion. A news release is attached with more information.
Don’t forget to RSVP for the Fifth Annual ONE-PS Neighborhood Night hosted by Desert Regional Medical Center. The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 2 in the Stergios Building (El Mirador Tower building). We will be inside and outside on the West Patio, so please dress accordingly. This, of course, is on the campus of the medical center, 1150 N. Indian Canyon Drive. Desert Regional hosts this event to show their appreciation to the residents of our Palm Springs neighborhoods. And ONE-PS is using this event to show its appreciation to the many volunteers who make our neighborhoods and neighborhood program successful -- including our Festival of Lights balloon wranglers, docents during the home tours, picnic and community expo workers, candidate night volunteers, people who staff the ONE-PS booths at VillageFest and Pride, etc. With appetizers, drinks and entertainment, it’s a great party. The deadline to submit applications to be on the newly created Ethics, Transparency and Government Reform Task Force has been extended to Thursday, Jan. 28. A news release is attached with more information.

- Tahquitz Canyon Way will be closed to westbound traffic between Indian Canyon Drive and Belardo Road from 7 a.m. Saturday, until 7 p.m., Saturday,
- Alejo Road will be closed between Palm Canyon and Indian Canyon from 5:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Saturday
- Additionally, northbound Indian Canyon Way from Aljeo Road to Vista Chino will be reduced to one lane from approximately 6:00 a.m. through 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
- 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. staggered start –100-MILE RIDE
- 8:00 a.m. 50-MILE RIDE
- 9:00 a.m. 25-MILE RIDE
- 10:00 a.m. 9-MILE RIDE
- 10:15 a.m. 1 and 3 mile walks which go westbound from Palm Canyon on Alejo.

- Via Miraleste will be closed to traffic between Tachevah and Tamarisk from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. that Sunday.
- The southbound lane of Belardo will be closed to traffic from Alejo Road to Tahquitz Canyon Way from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
- Belardo between South Palm Canyon and Ramon will be closed to all but local resident traffic from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
- The easterly lane on Palm Canyon from Tamarisk to Ramon Road will be conned off for the runners from 7:30 to 10 a.m.
- The eastbound lanes on Tahquitz Canyon Way between Palm Canyon and Indian Canyon will be closed from 7:30 to 10 a.m.

- A public hearing is being held to consider a recommendation by the Historic Site Preservation Board (HSPB) for historic district designation of the Sandcliff Garden Apartment Homes Condominiums. The district boundaries are proposed to encompass roughly 4.6 acres that comprise the Sandcliff development bounded by Barona Road on the west, East Morongo Trail on the south, and Sandcliff Road on the north.
- A public hearing also will be held to consider an appeal by Robert Herscu of South Palm Canyon LLC, regarding the Planning Commission’s decision on Dec. 9, 2015, denying an extension of time request for a previously approved Planned Development District 311. The Planned Development District was for the development of up to 125 condominium units and approximately 39,000 square feet of commercial space on a 2.67-acre site bounded by South Palm Canyon Drive on the west, Indian Canyon Drive on the east, and Ramon Road on the south, zoned CBD. The project was originally approved in 2006.
- A public hearing will be held to consider an application by PS Team, LLC on behalf of the owner AIC Capital, LLC for a two-lot Tentative Parcel Map (TPM) and a variance for lots smaller than the minimum size for the zones in which they are proposed. This is located at 2732 North Cardillo Road.
