As many of you know, I am also the staff liaison to our City’s Human Rights Commission. Each year the Commission recognizes residents and organizations for “Promoting Universal Human Rights Close to Home” by presenting them with the Commission’s Community Service Award. The Commission is interested in learning about local citizens or organizations that have worked notably to foster equality, ensure rights or have fought against hate crimes or any kind of ethnic, religious, sexual or other types of discrimination. If you know of someone, or an organization, that should be recognized for their efforts, please nominate them. Nomination forms and the criteria are available online at www.pshumanrightscommission.com. The deadline for submitting nominations is Friday, Nov. 13. The Commission will finalize the list of recipients at its Dec. 14 meeting and the awards will be presentedMonday, Feb. 8. A link to a list of past recipients also is available on the website. Attached is a news release with more information. Please help us get the word out so these worthy individuals and organizations can be recognized by the Commission.
A Graveyard Run 5K and Trick-Or-Treat Dash is planned for Saturday, Oct. 31.
Runners and walkers will be decked out in Halloween costumes as they toe the start line at the Temple Isaiah parking lot, 332 W. Alejo, (across the street from the cemetery). The race begins at 8 a.m. The 5K (3.12 mile) course goes through the Old Las Palmas and Vista Las Palmas neighborhoods and is runner, walker, stroller and doggie friendly. Additionally there will be a Trick-Or-Treat Dash for kids ages 10 and younger.
Hocker Productions will host this year’s Halloween on Arenas Road from 6 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 31. The entertainment starts at 6 p.m. with the popular costume contest beginning at 8:30 p.m. Arenas Road between Indian Canyon Drive and Calle Encilia will be closed from 1 p.m. until midnight Saturday.
Attached is a public hearing notice for the Nov. 4 City Council meeting. The purpose of the hearing is to review the environmental Initial Study prepared for the BUZZ transit service, and to adopt a Negative Declaration pursuant to the Guidelines of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). The BUZZ Trolley is a free transit service offered by the City of Palm Springs, covering a 10.5-mile loop between the Uptown District and the East Palm Canyon corridor. The service began as a pilot program in December 2014, and generally operates four days per week. The City Council will also consider the approval of the BUZZ transit service as a long term program, including the loop through the Tennis Club Neighborhood.
Attached is a public hearing notice for the Nov. 12 Planning Commission meeting. The purpose of this hearing is to consider a proposal to convert and subdivide an abandoned 125-acre golf course, formerly known as the Palm Springs Country Club, to 137 attached residences, 292 detached residences, streets, private open space and a public park. The applications include the following: A General Plan Amendment to (1) change approximately 126 acres of “Open Space – Parks / Recreation” to “Very Low Density Residential”, allowing up to 4 dwelling units per acre, and (2) modify text within the Recreation, Open Space & Conservation (ROSC) element to address the loss of golf course and addition of proposed public park; A Planned Development District in lieu of Zone Change to establish the project site plan, permitted uses and development standards; A Major Architectural Application to review proposed conceptual architecture; A Tentative Tract Map to subdivide the 156.18 gross acre site. The project site is located east of Sunrise Way, north of Verona Road, and southwest of the Whitewater River Floodplain.
