At today’s ONE-PS meeting we welcomed our 40th neighborhood organization – Escena! Congratulations! Escena’s Chair Robert Blackford will represent their neighborhood on ONE-PS and the organization’s Communications Officer Alanne Turnia will be the alternate. Both Robert and Alanne were at today’s meeting along with several other members of the Board of Advisors and neighbors. Welcome, Escena!
The ONE-PS Governance Committee will conduct a workshop Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Police Training Center to help neighborhood representatives fill out the necessary paperwork to obtain tax exempt status and become non-profit corporations. They’ll have templates of forms for you to fill out and local accountant Steve Erickson will be there to answer questions and explain the benefits of doing this. If you’re still deciding if this is something your neighborhood organization should do, please contact Doug Donenfeld at [email protected] or David Freedman at [email protected] from the Governance Committee.
The ONE-PS Ecology Committee is coordinating a citrus exchange next weekend. If you, or people in your neighborhood, have too much fruit, bring your extra tangerines, lemons, grapefruits, etc. to the Mayor’s Healthy Planet, Healthy You Race and Wellness Festival next Sunday, Jan. 24, at the Wellness Park. You can share your bounty with others or trade your tangelos for lemons. Either way, we can cut down on waste. You may drop off your citrus from noon to 4 pm. Saturday, Jan. 23 and from 7 to 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 24 at the Wellness Park which is adjacent to Ruth Hardy Park. The exchange will be take place on Sunday as part of the Wellness Festival. Attached is a flier to help you promote the citrus exchange in your neighborhoods.
The Palm Springs Police LGBT Outreach Committee is sponsoring a Town Hall Meeting from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.,Wednesday, Jan. 27 at Chill Bar. Come meet Police Chief Bryan Reyes and join him for a question and answer forum. A flier is attached to help you promote this event in your neighborhoods.
Volunteers are needed to count and survey homeless persons living on the streets within our community. This is part of the 2016 Riverside County Homeless Point-In-Time Count. Volunteers must attend a training session where they will receive instructions on conducting the count and on important safety guidelines. The count and survey will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 26, between 5:30 and 9:30 a.m. You can complete the volunteer registration online at www.RiversideHomelessCounts.com. A flier is attached with more information.
If you think you’ll need sandbags when the next big rain hits, now is the time to get them. The Fire Station at 300 N. El Cielo Road will give you 10 sandbags. Then you can come over to the sand pile in the northeast corner of the City Hall parking lot and fill them. Or, there are sandless sandbags that you can order online. I’m told Groupon has a good offer on them and that Lowe’s plans to carry them in the next few weeks. If you plan to get your sandbags at the Fire Station, stop by between8 a.m. and noon or between 1 to and 6 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays.
Non-profit agencies serving Palm Springs’ low to moderate income residents can now register online to receive federal Community Development Block Grant funds. The deadline to submit an application is 3 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4. A news release is attached with more information.

The Palm Springs Animal Shelter is in need of Meiselman Built Homes from the 1950s and 60s for the Feb. 13 tour during ModernismWeek. This tour is a critical fund-raiser for the shelter. Interested homeowners should contact Keith Zabel, Board of Directors, Friends of the Palm Springs Animal Shelter at (m) 760.902.0070 or (e) [email protected]. Participating homeowners will receive four passes to the Meiselman Homes Tour and other goodies to make it worth your while. Please contact Keith for the details.
Attached is a public hearing notice for the Jan. 27 Planning Commission meeting. The purpose of the hearing is to consider an application by Jennifer Guglielmo on behalf of Doggie’s Day Out of Palm Springs, for a Conditional Use Permit to operate a kennel (dog care, boarding and training) within a 2,345-square foot space of a multi-tenant industrial park building located at 752 Vella Road.
