The Hunt Family Totem Pole restoration project is underway. On Friday, Nov. 13 from 2:45 to 3:15 p.m. there will be an educational program at Victoria Park open to the public. There will be approximately 75 fourth graders from Vista Del Monte Elementary School visiting the site to watch and learn about the carving tradition practiced by the Hunt Family, the original carvers of the totem pole. Please feel free to stop by. Here is a list of the specific work that is being done:
· Cleaning and/or stripping off the paint.
· Re-carving and re-attaching the beak is the highest priority and focusing on any other areas that need to be carved or patched.
· Designing the pole to its original state per any pictures.
· Repainting the pole to its original colors per pictures and using knowledge of Henry Hunt’s style of painting. Applying as many coats as needed to achieve the desired quality with a minimum of two coats per color.
· Oiling of the finished product with natural oils.
Each year the Palm Springs Human Rights Commission recognizes Coachella Valley residents and organizations for “Promoting Universal Human Rights Close to Home” by presenting them with the Commission’s Community Service Award. The Commission is interested in learning about local citizens or organizations that have worked notably to foster equality, ensure rights or have fought against hate crimes or any kind of ethnic, religious, sexual or other types of discrimination. If you know of someone, or an organization, that should be recognized for their efforts, please nominate them. Nomination forms and the criteria are available online at www.pshumanrightscommission.com. The deadline for submitting nominations is tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 13. The Commission will finalize the list of recipients at its Dec. 14 meeting and the awards will be presented Monday, Feb. 8. A link to a list of past recipients also is available on the website.
Construction of the Farrell right turn lane at Vista Chino (Highway 111) will begin on Monday, Nov. 16. The eastbound No. 3 Lane on Vista Chino (Highway 111) and the northbound No. 2 Lane on Farrell will be closed during construction. Construction is anticipated to last until the end of December. The work consists of constructing a northbound right turn lane on Farrell Drive; construction of a new bus turnout on Vista Chino, and relocation of an existing bus stop; upgrading the southeast corner curb ramp at the intersection; modification of traffic signals; and construction of a new meandering sidewalk. Sunline will bypass this bus stop during construction.
There will be a dedication of the 9/11 Memorial beginning at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 5 at Fire Station 2, 300 N. El Cielo Road. The Palm Springs Firemen’s Association was able to secure a piece of steel from the World Trade Center and that steel is now part of a memorial. Attached is a flier with information about the Dec. 5 dedication.
Thanks to all the volunteers who staffed the ONE-PS booth at last weekend’s Pride Festival. I stopped by Sunday after the parade and snapped the photo below of Terry Towne, Paula Auburn and Kyle Husfloen at the booth. And just like at the picnic, residents enjoyed putting dot on their home on our big map. Speaking of the parade, ONE-PS Chair Lisa Middleton rode in style.
Jeanie Cunningham from the Twin Palms Neighborhood Organization spoke at today’s ONE-PS meeting about gathering excess citrus. She is volunteering to assemble a crew to work with her to pick up and/or harvest the fruit for her Twin Palms neighbors who wish to donate their extra citrus to the local food banks and homeless shelters. If there are other neighborhoods who are interested in helping to gather fruit from their neighbors, perhaps you can join forces with Jeanie. If you are interested in sharing your abundance of fruit, have suggestions or wish to volunteer, please email Jeanie at [email protected]
ONE-PS will be electing its five officers at the Dec. 10 meeting. Incumbents seeking re-election to another one-year term are:
Lisa Middleton – Chair
Phil Strout – Vice Chair
Terry Towne – Secretary
Larry Da Silva – Treasurer
ONE-PS has two Vice Chair positions, but Thom Bettinger, who is the Second Vice Chair, has decided not to seek re-election. The ONE-PS Nominating Committee announced today that Curt Watts, Chair of the Sunrise Park Neighborhood Organization, is interested in running for Vice Chair.
Voting will be done by ballots at the December ONE-PS meeting and there will be space to write in names. If you would like to know more about this, please contact a member of the ONE-PS Nominating Committee: Thom Bettinger, Paula Auburn, Doug Donenfeld and Sheila Cobrin.
We have residents who live on the Upper West Side of Palm Springs – Murano, Vintage Palms, Sundance and Palermo who are interested in forming a neighborhood organization. They want to include Park San Rafael, but do not know anyone who lives there. If you do, would you please let them know there is interest in forming a neighborhood organization and we’d like to have their names and contact information.
The Planning Commission will meet next Wednesday afternoon, but the City Council will not meetnext Wednesday night. A link to the Planning Commission agenda will be posted on the City’s calendar webpage:
