The Wild Turkey Trot 5K run/walk on Thursday, Nov. 26, will let people burn off some calories before sitting down to their Thanksgiving meal. The race starts at 8 a.m. on Palm Canyon Drive at Tahquitz Canyon Way. Runners and walkers will head south to Ramon Road, then turn west on Ramon to Belardo where they will go south to just before the intersection with South Palm Canyon. There they will turn around and follow the same route back to the finish line at Palm Canyon and Tahquitz.
Road closures associated with this event:
• Tahquitz Canyon Way between Belardo and Palm Canyon will close by 5 a.m.
• Palm Canyon from Amado to Ramon will close by 6:30 a.m.
• Belardo from Ramon to South Palm Canyon will close by 6:30 a.m.
All roads are expected to be open by 10 a.m. that morning and local traffic in and out of the neighborhoods will be accommodated.
VillageFest will not be taking place on Thanksgiving Day nor on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve.
The official City of Palm Springs holiday tree lighting will take place Thursday, Dec. 3 at 5:15 p.m. in Frances Stevens Park. There will be free cookies and hot coca, caroling by the Palm Springs High School Madrigal Singers and the Palm Springs High School Symphonic Orchestra followed by the arrival of Santa Claus. Then it’s time to throw the switch and light the City’s 22-foot holiday tree. A news release is attached with more information, including the names of the five celebrities who will be participating in this year’s tree lighting.
The Palm Springs Police Department’s next Citizens’ Police Academy will begin Thursday, Jan. 14. There is still time to register for this free program which meets one night a week for 13 weeks. Attendees participate in discussions about patrol procedures, traffic investigation, K-9, SWAT, community policing, narcotics, crime scene investigation and other interesting topics. Attendees are also invited to participate on a ride-along with a PSPD Patrol Officer during a patrol shift. The classes meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, beginning Jan. 14. To qualify for the Citizens’ Police Academy, applicants must be at least 18 years old and have no felony convictions. Attached is a public hearing notice for the Dec. 9 Planning Commission meeting. The purpose of the hearing is to consider an application by Davidson Cameron 226, LLC, to amend a previously approved Planned Development District (PD 314) to allow a height increase of up to 6.6 feet on certain residential units within the development at the northeast corner of South Palm Canyon Drive and Mesquite Avenue. The approved planned development allows for the construction of a mixed-use project consisting of 22 live-work units, 80 attached townhomes and 15,000 square feet of retail space on the 11.7-acre parcel. The proposed amendment is to add roof decks to 63 of the 102 previously approved residential units.
